Depression in Equines
Posted March 13, 2011 by Ride A Jumper in Horse Stories
I am beginning to believe my filly is somewhat depressed. She is mopey, not much energy... just kinda "blue".

She is ridden 4-5x per week, has 8 hours of turnout, can see other horses in her stall, good hay, grain and air movement.

She seems very lethargic ... she loves hugs and being loved on so I do give her all the attention she craves and then some...

Any suggestions??

My sweet little Kinsley took a blow to the upper left front leg today. Cut her right in the muscle area... It nicked an artery and was spurting blood. Thank goodness I was there. I put cold compresses on her and got the bleeding stopped. She was hurting so bad... poor baby. She actually had tears coming out of one eye. I got the bleeding stopped and cold hosed her for a while and gave her 2.5 grams of banamine. Bless her heart, she's only 8 weeks old. That brought back so many horrifying memories of the day 2 years ago I lost my 7 week old Racing Kaine. I was a mess and so scared. The vet did xrays and she's going to be just fine... nothing bad, Kinsley's just going to be sore for a few days. Thank God she's ok.

Rough summer

Well CJ was at it again last week! She started to colic then got better then back to the colic. Finally had the vet out on Friday and by that evening she was showing great improvement. What a rough summer it has been with her but I can't complain too much since its the first problem that we have ever had with her. As long as my girl is healthy I don't care what the cost!!!

Does anyone use Mare Magic/Calm & Cool? I have my filly on Mare Magic and hoping it works as it's a natural and won't test at the "A" shows. Some of the calming supps test and if you test positive you will be suspended from competition for 30-60-90 days depending of what you are caught using.

Just looking for other suggestions, if the Mare Magic does not work.

Thanks!

CJ

Well it finally happened, my CJ got sick! Its the first time in almost 3 years that anything serious has happened with her so guess I am pretty lucky. Monday night I went out to feed her when I noticed a small scrape on the side of her head. I wiped it and it started poring out this &^%$ stuff. Had Gary check it when he got home. We cleaned it all out and put some povidine on it. Next night it didn't look any better so we called the vet out. He sedated her, cleaned and disinfected the wound when he found an absyess on her chin area. He lanced and drained that, gave her antibotics with instructions on how to clean the areas and meds to give her dailey. Guess it is strep which is the 1st step to strangles!! Thank goodness we keep a close eye on her!! Thanks to my Miss Sandi also for her instructions on dealing with this. CJ is already feeling better, talking up a storm and, pardon the pun, eating like a horse!!!!
